REFLECTOR: Stick Force

Hi Joe,

I am sorry I can’t offer better on this. I have the XL. The question mark
shaped elv spring would not fit for me either. Mine is cut back to work
more like a bow-and-arrow kind of bow for how it works. Even with that it
is right up against my pitot-static lines and wire bundles when at full
flex, and only just clears the fuselage cut out which was the deciding
factor on it’s final length overall. I also have the dash 5 model w/ the
cut down keel and I put in a speedbrake. The SB came w/ an longer actuating
cyl than does the el trim cyl but it’s the same component. Sorry I forget
now the actually lengths like maybe 6 inches and 8 inches. We canabalized
the Elv cly for the SB due space issues in the keel. Then found when we got
to the Elv install, and with other problems w/ the pitch servo install for
the autopilot, we found that the longer remaining old SB cyl would work on
the elevator.

You could say its like an S shape, but maybe more like a hunk of slightly
curving road than a letter. It is mounted left of center more or less in
front of the pilot where I had the most panel depth to sacrifice, and I had
to cut away about ¼ inch or more of the trailing edge of the canard to make
fit it in place without restriction across its full range of motion. As you
can maybe tell from the pic the actuating rod only just clears the aft
fuselage flange of the canard cover. To this modified factory spring we
(Hangar 18 advice again) beefed it up with a couple more layers of bid and
we increased its width until we had a spring that was too strong. Then
after it was all hooked up I decreased its width with a drum sander in the
middle portions until it felt “about right” (plus a little) on the hangar
floor with final tweaking to do during flight test. I too had the same
question then that you do now, and just guessed at it going on the notion
that it’s easier to sand off too little and go back in for more then to yank
it out and put back more layers of bid !

After 5 hours I have no gripes, but I admit that it’s too soon to say it’ll
work well throughout the full wgt and balance envelope. It is nice and wide
where it is drilled into the torque tube.

I wish I had a better pic to show, but sorry I don’t. Look for the black
cyl sticking up in the background. You can see the top half of the spring.
I didn’t hook the dam thing up until the very end just before I closed the
canard cover because it was always in my way. Next time I take the cover
off, which will be in late Jan, I plan to get a bunch of pictures that I
should have made for my own needs on how it’s in there with all the lines
and wiring all tied back and tucked in.

Terry

Hi Keith,

I researched Alex's system - at the time 2 were installed in Velocities.
One was successful (Dave) the other was not successful (and Alex could get
it to function properly) so I shied away from the strong pitch trim. I also
have installed some electrical devices (relay boards) that would interfere.
I can move them if required, was just trying an approach that would not
require redoing any completed work.

Thanks,

Joe

Joe,

If the original ? trim spring won’t fit, how about Alex Strong’s system?

Has anyone measured the force on the control stick in flight? If not does
anyone have an estimate on the force the trim spring applies or the force
required to make a control deflection. I can not use the factory trim
spring, there is no room left behind the panel for it. I think I have a
concept that will work, I just need to calculate the spring force and rate.
All help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Joe
