REFLECTOR: factory support email

You're right that the problem has to do with open relay servers. However,
our email server is not configured as an open relay. The problem is actually
very strange. My understanding of the situation is as follows:
 
We use DNSBL Filtering, or, DNS Black List Filtering, to limit our spam. The
nature of DNSBL filtering is that all incoming mail is routed through a
subscription third party 'blocklist' server that compares the origins of an
email against a database of known spamming DNS addresses and known spamming
server attributes.  Like you said, one of the big no-no's in the anti-spam
world is to send via an open relay. The problem that we've encountered in
the last week has to do with the finalization last week of the
AT&T/Bellsouth merger. As part of a general hardware integration - there are
several thousand routers right now under the care of AT&T that are
configured as open relays. So if any emails sent to velocityaircraft.com go
through any of these AT&T routers at any point in their electronic journey,
they get tagged with an 'open relay' mark that our DNSBL filter will bounce.
This is the reason that some emails will be bounced the first time, and
accepted the very next time you hit send - because the server pathways that
an email follows are largely random; some times they will be directed
through one of these open relays, sometimes not. It all has to do with the
level of volume a particular switch or router is receiving at any given
moment. 
 
This was a completely unexpected situation, and our DNSBL filtering rules
haven't quite caught up yet with the change. Obviously this is an absolutely
unacceptable situation. And I'm doing absolutely everything I can right now
to get the situation straightened out.
 
One thing that everyone can do to help me out is to send a few test emails
to Velocity today and forward your error logs to me if you can't get
through. If you can't get through to kenb at velocityaircraft.com - please send
them to my personal address at kencbaker at bluebottle.com . The more error
logs I get, the more I can isolate the exact nature of the problem - and the
quicker these emails will stop bouncing.
