I haven't flown a Velocity without the lower winglet, and only have 10 hours flying time on my XLRG. But what I can tell you from my short time flying my Velocity, is that it is very controllable in all aspects. I flew this last Saturday to a local fly in breakfast at (KEOS), and the winds picked up after my arrival, and swung to a 90 degree 14 knot crosswind. Needless to say as a low time Velocity pilot, I was very apprehensive about this takeoff. If I had been at my home base, with these same conditions, I would not have flown that day. But since I needed to get back home, I decided to take the chance. I was very pleased with the crosswind handling at the departure airport, and my subsequent crosswind landing at my home Airport (KROG). Again I haven't flown a Velocity without the lower winglet, but from the conversations here on the Reflector, it makes me a believer that they will help us low time Velocity pilots, not to bang up our newly finished
aircraft.
On another point, I attended the Velocity transition training, and I am a true believer, that every new Velocity pilot should have this training. From my experience, our Velocities fly different at low speeds than a conventional tailed aircraft. Aileron control at low speeds (80 knot final approach) need to be led by onside rudder inputs. This took some time for me to get use to, which I learned during the transition Velocity transition training.
