The smallest folding hoist you can get that will lift the engine. The IO-550N weighs 412 lbs without accessories. The average weight with accessories is 467 lbs., well below max capacity if most all the economical engine hoists.

If you have a local EAA chapter, they may have an engine hoist that you can use if you join their chapter. Our chapter has a lot of shop equipment at the members disposal for the cost of joining the chapter.

I've never installed an engine before, either in a car or plane. Are there any special requirements for the engine hoist I'm going to need to put an IO-550 on my XL? Can I just get a (relatively) inexpensive automotive hoist like this . . . ?
