Don't see it, unless it's based on the CE kernel or they completely made a new OS with a different kernel, then it wouldn't be NT anymore. That's too big an undertaking as Sun tried that when they initially got into SANs. They learned the hard way that couldn't happen. The workaround is to use preemptive multitasking...

I don't think you understand. The NT that Boeing uses in their advanced 7 models is a NT RTOS.  I've been around as they say in the world of OS's, I've written software for I forget how many OS's. I understand the difference between what the NT is that you or I run on a PC, and the NT Raytheon re-engineered for Boeing.   believe me it was an RTOS, in the true sense of the word.

It's (NT) actually preemptive kernel multitasking, not RTOS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preemption_%28computing%29

An OS like VxWorks is an RTOS which is used in things like pacemakers.

I worked on the system for the 767, 787 aircraft at Raytheon, years ago.  Amazingly enough Raytheon bought the code base from Microsoft for NT, which I do consider the best OS Microsoft has ever made.  They re-engineered into a "real time" os.  Running on hardned military grade chassis. My little Air Data subsystem was given about 2% of the total alloted time for critical systems.

Every 767 has three of these computers running on three different buss's.  With a split redundant buss available to any computer.  All three cross check each other. They have never had a system wide failure.

The computer handles everything from engine control to the lavatory lighting.

This is why I am using GRT (with dual AHARS) as my main system and a Dynon (on a separate Bus) as a back up.

The thinking is that all systems have unpredictable failure modes and by having 2 different systems, the likelihood is that the failure modes will be different.

Seems even commercial-grade glass goes to sleep at inopportune times occasionally at this stage of the technology's development. This problem seems fairly severe. A few steam gauges for backup might be the MO for the foreseeable future as we head solid-state on our flight instruments.
