REFLECTOR: Anyone flying a STD-RG with a single, rear mounted oil cooler?

Thanks to all who replied!
Grover & John - Thanks for the input. If my single goal was to find a way
to cool the oil more, there are several options including a bigger cooler
in the nose, a two pass cooler, a second cooler in the engine compartment,
along with other ideas I've had such as simply blowing air down the wiring
channel to use the surface area of the oil lines as radiating surface.
Another idea might be to see if I can keep the airflow attached in a nose
high attitude to get better effectiveness out of the cooler I have.
What I'd really like, though, is to gain both speed and better cooling -
and if I believe I can get the oil cooled as good or better with a single
rear cooler, I can eliminate the NACA shaped "open hole" in the nose -
extremely draggy - and get speed along with my oil temp fix. That's my
goal, and so what I'm wondering is if anyone has had success in a STD-RG,
IO-360 airplane.
Doug, an FYI - up until perhaps 300 hours ago, I too had CHT cooling
issues. I was flying the original (original) set up - armpit scoops
feeding a plenum on the top of the engine. After trying tufting and oil
studies, accompanied by numerous scoop changes, a top mounted scoop, and
many other ideas, I finally went with the (now) factory standard setup with
two roof mounted NACAs. It absolutely solved my CHT problems - I highly
recommend it. It wasn't as much work as you might think.
In any case, my plane is perfectly flyable now (1000+ hours)... what I'm
looking for is a way to make it faster, and without the current long climb
induced oil temp issues. Does anyone have any experience with a single
rear mounted cooler?
THANKS!
Dave

I've got a fixed gear with a single oil cooler on the engine side of the
firewall and another oil cooler on the cabin side of the firewall for cabin
heat. Running the cabin heater in the summer brings my oil temps down
about 10 degrees F.
I started out with a NACA under the belly for the engine oil cooler and
could only fly about 10 minutes before one of the cylinders was over 400
F. So then I made a little scoop, and then I made a bigger scoop. The
bigger scoop got me flying regularly, but even then I couldn't give it full
throttle in the summer time for more than 10 minutes or so before the
cylinder temps would start to get too hot. So when I took the wings off
and brought the plane home to paint I made an even bigger scoop and hope to
try it out here in the next few weeks. I'll send a picture.

Winter is coming here in Minnesota, and so I'm thinking about what I want
to plan for winter projects. Klaus Savier has been after me for years to
get rid of my nose mounted oil cooler and go to a single oil cooler in
the rear.
My current setup is with the roof mounted NACAs, and one "standard"
cooler (in the nose). My CHTs are reliably all low, particularly in
cruise where my highest cylinder will be at around 340 (with the lowest
as low as 260). My oil temp is reliably around 200 - 210 in cruise on a
warm day, and less than 200 on a cool day. My issue is in long climbs.
I regularly fly out to the mountains, and also I like to go high (16K or
more) when the winds favor. In a full power sustained climb, say from
takeoff to 12K, if I'm not careful I can easily get the oil to redline.
So, in net, my cruise temps are fine, but my climb oil temp could be
improved.
Klaus is after me to move the oil cooler for drag reduction (not oil
temp). The large "NACA" in the nose along with the outlet ramp
represents a sizeable amount of drag. Less Drag = More Speed = Klaus.
So... winter is coming, and I'm thinking of moving the cooler to get
better cooling and to reduce drag. But, before I get into a big mess...
What experience is out there regarding STD-RG IO-360 Velocities with a
single oil cooler in the back?
Thanks!

Guys,
I didn't get any comments on the CloudAhoy link from my second
flight. Did you look at it? It's a fantastic flight analysis tool.
You simply start the app when you are leaving your hangar, it
collects all GPS/inertial data on the iPad/phone then uploads it to
the CloudAhoy server. You have to look at the result to believe it.
It'll ask you to install Google Earth, but its well worth it.
Here's the link to my second flight:
