FALLS OF ROUGH, KY (WAVE) – Lyle R. Moss, 61, of Louisville, has been identified by Grayson County Coroner, Joe Brad Hudson, as the pilot of a small plane that crashed into a hotel near Rough River State Park in Grayson County Friday afternoon. The cause of death is still pending.
According to the Grayson County Sheriff's Department, the plane struck the rear side of the Pine Tree Inn around 1:45 p.m. The sheriff's department said the pilot was the only fatality.
Steve Harmon, Steve Parkins, and Michael Lafleor made their way to Grayson County for an annual fly-in, a convention for those who hand build airplanes.
"He had just flown here for the day," said Lafleor. "He made a couple passes and I could hear the engine over revving and cutting out."
Harmon says he talked to the pilot who said he was from Louisville, for about a half hour before he took off.
"There was probably 100 people standing to watch that happen and of course there was screaming and for me a deep depression," said Harmon.
It was a sight they never wanted to see. "I heard it again behind me and then moments later, a couple girls screaming, oh my God. Oh my God," said Lafleor.
The small one engine plane crashed into the back side of the Pine Tree Inn, starting a massive fire.
"It's just a mess of flames and there is really nothing anyone can do," said Lafleor. "I go through the burning bushes to turn on the water, to get some water on the fire on the back of the building and about ten minutes later the fire trucks came."
Hilary Coughlin who was staying in the hotel, left her room moments before the crash.
"The only thing that I was worrying about is that I knew the only person in the building was the owner, so I wanted to make sure that she had gotten out and she did," said Coughlin.
"Unfortunately we have to witness this and it's hard, you just tear up, it's just difficult," said Parkins.
Harmon says the pilot mentioned he bought his plane and recently switched out the motor. FAA is conducting an investigation to try to figure out what exactly happened. The pilot's name has not yet been released

I've been helping the NTSB and FAA with their investigation of the crash at RR. I'm trying to establish if the pilot of the Glassair was making radio calls during his takeoff and short flight until the crash. I've pulled the following N numbers from my photo files of the first few planes to land just after the crash. Please e-mail me if you heard anything over the radio from pilot, either yes or no and what you remember him transmitted if anything. Thanks in advance for helping.
