REFLECTOR: Triax flange for doors

Reiff,

Linda made a template for the shape to cut the triax.  If you want it I can
mail it or drop it off.  Basicallly, she took some paper and layed it on
the fuselage.  Drew the shape and then cut the paper to size.  We then cut
the triax as needed.  It really help, especially in the corners.  Triax
will move a lot, but can be difficult.

I didn't build mine, so clearly my advice isn't the most useful. But,
first, I'd bondo those sticks.  Maybe you have, I can't tell from the
picture, but you definitely don't want the door moving when you start the
layups.  Secondly, I'd make sure to make the flange a little fat.  you can
always trim it later, but adding will be really aggravating.


Oh, and tape the crap out of the door.  You want to make sure it releases
afterwards, and if you're going to add a windlace like ours onto the flange
later, a couple of layers of tape will give you some space in there for
that without putting too much pressure on the door.


And I wouldn't stress over it too much, if there's anything slightly out of
alignment, Scott can adjust it in about a hour while you're at the factory.

My suggestion is to make sure you leave enough flange material so that it
will accept a decent gasket for sealing against the door.
The manual may have changed since 15 years ago, but if not, either make a
much smaller BID tape radius, or make a larger flange.

I've just started building an XL RG. The doors fit pretty well, and I've
glued the cutouts back in temporarily. My next step is building the flange
around the inside of the door cutout with 2 plies of triax.


I'm planning on just following the directions in the manual unless someone
tells me there's an easier / better / faster way. Any words of wisdom?
