Thanks Craig, Bob, and Scott! That's a big help.

It's Craig but no biggie. We see 170KTAS at 9,500, 12.5GPH fixed gear with main wheel pants only. When the nose pant stays on we get another 5kts. If you run ROP you can get another 5kts. The plane will do 195kt in that same configuration at 1000'msl wide open. Scott's right, the engine is awesome for the Velocity when paired with a CS prop. Takeoff performance in the summer is a no brainer. I've done Santa Fe, middle of the day in the summer, full fuel (68gal), 4 adults, 150 lbs baggage and it was the first time my wife said "why can't you takeoff like that all the time, it was like the cessana we used to have". Yea, we were ONLY seeing 700 fpm that day.

I'm considering a Continental IO-550N for an XL RG. What cruise speed do you see at the settings you quoted . . .?

Don - LOP, 12.5 GPH at 9,500 feet (fixed gear)
Bob -- 85% power LOP, turbo (currently only at low altitudes)

What are other XL RG owners getting for true airspeed cruise? My mission requires 200 kts true for 4 hours plus IFR reserves. Any recommendations for engine or performance mods?

Thanks!

Don-

We built our plane before pictures were all electronic but I can scan some in a couple days if you more details. We are running -N, going on 625 hours on XL-5FG. We do not have any cooling air going to the engine mounted cooler, but we are plumbed to a forward nose mounted cooler. We too try to keep our CHTs below 380. We will occasionally see 400s on a cylinder or two after climbout on a hot day after a quick turn fuel stop. Typical flight shows CHTs from 300 to 360 with 2 typically our hottest. We typically see 180deg on the oil in the winter and 190-200 in the summer. We run LOP exclusively, typically see 12.5 GPH at 9,500 feet and if you believe the electronics engine analyzer around 75% power. Besides saving gas we have seen that ROP increases CHTs 30-60 and oil at least 20 degrees. We are based out of Lancaster in California. Because of all the dirt and dust out here we did spend the time to build an air intake with inline air filters, that's probably the only unique thing about our install.

Looking for some info on Continental IO550-N installs.

Specifically, pictures of cooling plenum installations and in particular, the oil cooler ducting.

As for finished/flying aircraft, what kind of CHTs and oil temps are you seeing?

Thanks!

Don Johnston
