The Morse Code was the reason I didn't get a license either.  After studying the Code a while, I came to the conclusion:

And nowadays the Morse code requirement is non-existent for any level.  That was the barrier that kept me from getting a General Class.

you need to operate APRS or the more popular communication bands is a 
technician level (no morse code) license. That covers VHF (2m/144 mhz) 
and UHF (70 cm/444 mhz)
