Andy I have been flying both kinds of cooling on the XL's.  I do believe upper NACA scoops are better.  I do believe they keep the flow better through the cylinders and also cuts down on some of the over-all drag of the plane.  I found that the speed is a bit more with the NACA scoops.  Both the planes I fly have the same engine and prop and the one with the NACA scoops runs cooler and faster, just a bit.  So conceder this when building.  Even if the top of the plane looks cleaner, without the scoops.
