REFLECTOR: crankshaft seal

Jim,

The recollection that I have is that this seal can blow out if the crankcase vent is is plugged - for example, iced up from flying in freezing conditions and not having an "ice hole" in the vent line inside the cowl to relieve the built up crankcase pressure.

I used to have an ice hole in my vent line - but it seemed to be leaking oil mist onto the fire wall.  I did away with it and vowed not to fly in icing conditions.  Flying in ice can ruin your day and cause more problems than a frozen vent line.  I live in the sunny south and I can definitely avoid flying in ice.  If you are still worried about icing the vent line, you could route it so that it attaches/connects to the exhaust pipe, which would keep it plenty hot.

I have not heard anything in particular to pusher engines and this seal retainer.
