You are correct
I would never use a nylon lock nut on the engine side of the fire wall.AC  
43.13-B forbids fiber or nylon locknuts in applications exceeding   exceeding  
250f.
We did our 5/8 bolts the same as you .That is drill and castellated  nuts 
with cotter pin. 
Fiber nuts or OK forward of the gear bulkhead.
