REFLECTOR: TT autopilot installation in XLFG

Sorry I didn't get back.  Swampped at present.  (And remember I am not
flying yet.)  I've got the TT stuff too, and Stein and I are well
acquainted.  He can call me, or you can.  I am happy to lend help as
needed.or tap Collier's recall on what works and what doesn't.    

 

We put the elevator servo on the canard.pics coming when I can get organized
enuf with cameras and email.  For the aileron servo:  your position would
appear to be the best, but according to M. Collier he has found there's too
much slop in the linkage to hook both aileron cables into the servo at the
keel point.  Try getting a hold of John Leiter, who I think can confirm this
problem and the fix as I outline.   We are putting the aileron servo on
engine side of the firewall (LH half outboard) to grab only the left
aileron.  RH aileron will not be connected.  This to prevent the ship from
hunting back and forth to hold heading.  If you go this route, tell  Stein
not to put the end electrical plug on the aileron cable.which we will shove
down the LH utility channel as soon as I can unscramble a pile of wire.  

 

The engine-end is now all wired less the starter coil.  Some ham-hand
snapped off a pc of phrenolic (sp?) trying to wring down a bolt.  Skytec is
giving us another coil gratis which is nice.   I am hoping for engine start
in the next week or so after I connect the EIS and enuf other front end
stuff to mash the starter button.

Has anyone finished a satisfactory installation of a TruTrak 2-axis
autopilot in an XL FG?  

 

I'm putting an ADI Pilot 2 in my project plane and SteinAir is building the
panel and providing the autopilot.  They are asking me where the servos will
install, and exactly how long the wiring runs from the control head to each
servo need to be.  I don't have any of the hardware in hand, so it's a bit
difficult for me to determine what will fit where.  I assume that the pitch
servo will mount on top of the canard, and I'm thinking the roll servo will
mount on the pilot's side of the fuselage, next to the sump tank and just
aft of the "fishtail" of the keel; that way a pushrod can reach the
bellcrank on the end of the control stick torque tube.

 

Any advice or photos would be appreciated!

Keith:

I need to know what lengths you need for the roll and pitch servo leads(auto
pilot). The best way I know how to do this is to use a piece of rope. Start
approximately where the auto pilot is located at the panel and run the rope
where you plan to route the wire, mark and measure.

Also another customer was wondering where you were planning to mount the
pitch servo?
