REFLECTOR: Adjustable scoop; was Low CHTs

Before you install this setup; you may wish to find out whether it works
effectively for entrance openings larger than the x-sectional area further
in.  As I understand it; scoops do not work well when any part of the duct
contracts.   Higher pressure downstream (choking in the throat) will cause
the air to flow around the scoop.  It may work up until the point where the
combined pressure drop of accelerating the air in the duct, plus the drop
through the fins equals the dynamic pressure at the entrance.

 

The most effective scoop requires ever expanding area (reduced velocity) in
the duct for pressure recovery.

This time of year my CHTs are low and my oil temp is also, making it
difficult to heat
the cabin.  I'm thinking of putting butterfly valves in the engine cooling
inlets,
similar to what is in my engine intake air for carbureator heat.  Rather
than run
cables, I'm thinking of using a bi-metallic spring, like is used for
automatic chokes
on cars to open and close the valves.  Ideally the spring would work off of
CHT, but I
think this will be to complicated, so I think using OAT would be more
practical.
Any thoughts whether this is a good idea?
