Pat, I was in my back yard at the approach end of RW3, I think my kids
thought I was crazy jumping up and down as I was. Looked and sounded great.

What do you mean ?a bit? (in relation to weird) Al??
;^)
Of course you are spot on with what you say both in terms of everybody in
the World (it?s new down here!) and the selectivity of the press & public.
It?s the same down here so don?t feel like you are alone in this.

Definitely not good PR for the GA community. This made it on the 'front
page' of USA Today online and is probably on the networks too. I just
hope people will understand how non-threatening a small plane really is.
IIRC; about 110 people are killed every day in this country in auto
accidents; and nobody notices. Two people get killed in a small plane crash
maybe every few weeks, and it?s headline news for hours, and everybody in
the country is talking about it.
I was in the dentist chair today when they heard the news. It was the buzz
of the office, and the dentist and assistant were agreeing that ?those
planes should not be allowed to fly over a city, there is just no reason for
it?. Unfortunately, at the time I had to keep my mouth shut while the
?epoxy? was curing on a new crown. When I commented later on their lack of
perspective they looked at me like I was a bit weird.

Terry:
Too add a little more info to Craig's reply about our XL-5FG with speed
brake:
Our max extension angle is about 75 degrees. Chap 14 recommends not to
exceed 60 degrees. How we ended up that way was we converted to the cutdown
keel halfway through the build and had to adjust our actuator position to
make it work. It resulted in more extension angle than we originally had.
It also resulted in the actuator being installed in a nearly vertical
position which makes for a not very good load path from door through
actuator to keel. On my to do list is to do the math and figure what loads
our actuator is seeing in our configuration versus the book installation.
Our test pilot likes to fly his final approach with the speed brake extended
so he can keep more power in and have better engine response. I tried the
same technique but was not very comfortable with it and my landings showed
that. I went back to flying without it like I was primarly taught at the
factory and my landings improved greatly. Once I am more comfortable in the
airplane I will probably go back and experiment with the speed brake some
more, especially to shorten landing distance.
As a side note to the discussion about rapid descents with gear or brakes
extended: The factory airplane wires the speed brake so it is either fully
extended of fully retracted. I assume this air load on the door and into
the actuator and keel is what drives the 110kts speed brake limitation.
Craig and I wired our speed brake so the brake only extends while you hold
the switch down so we can extend to any angle we want by how long we hold
the switch (we have a position indicator on the panel). Flip the switch up
and the brake retracts completely for a go-around, in case your wondering.
While I'm figuring out loads on the brake, I also intend to look at whether
I can get away with a shallower speed brake angle at a higher speed than 110
and get the benefit of the drag for a higher rate of descent. Thats an
engineering problem for down the road if I don't convince myself its a bad
idea before then.
Hope that wasn't too much information....

Thanks you guys. ...and thanks Jorge. The only one I could half way
measure looked to be between 55 to 60.

I'd say our extension angle is around 60 degrees. I honestly can't
remember right now if the manual said to limit it or not. The test
pilot landed with it down every time, but I haven't used it yet.

Unfortunately, the public at large does not have any perspective on
aviation. And most in the Media are just as ill-informed as the public.
So they express their ill-informed opinions in the media.
Didn't we have an auto accident the other day where a little old lady
hit the accelerator instead of the brake and plowed into a store? This
time no one was hurt, but often times in similar accidents people have
been killed. I see this type of accident as very similar to a small
plane hitting a building, yet the News Media absolutely responds to
them quite differently.
They give a ho-hum approach to the auto accident, yet if anything
involves an airplane they'll chase after it for weeks. Often it'll lead
to stories about how unsafe our skies are, and how any pilot could fly a
small plane into anything (so NO ONE is safe). This is usually followed
by calls to get those Dangerous Things out of Our skies.

Matt,
Try an internet search on "aircraft salvage" as I
would think those mounts could be found at a salvage
yard. If not, try an engine rebuild shop.
That would have been me in Scottsdale on Sunday. I was
showing my XLRG to a prospective buyer. He didn't
agree to my price, which may be emotionally inflated
after 7 years and 6,000 hours of building...
When my interior, EFIS, and new auto pilot go in, then
the price really is going to be high!
Oh, and the 325NM trip from Van Nuys to Scottsdale
took less than 1:45 each way.

Al,
FWIW, I have the Alan's wings and canard on my XL. The
standard incidence gauges seem to have rigged the
plane properly. My point here is that the additional
camber *might* not be the culprit.
However, if your canard is longer than the standard
(build your own) dimension, that seems like it could
cause a rigging problem. Have you heard from anyone
with a your specific set-up: 173 wings, standard
fuselage, longer canard (approx 162" sans tips)? I'd
be curious to know if the standard incidence gauges
worked for them.

Does anyone have a source for the Hartman latch. Factory says they have
none.
