REFLECTOR: What is our XL-5RG worth?

Don’t mean to wee on your or your girlfriend’s bonfire Peter, but….from my
first hand experience/close observation of sales in both US and Australian
markets for kits and unfinished projects, the sad fact is that an aircraft
kit typically goes down in price during the build over what the parts
intially cost even though you might be adding thousands of hours of labour
and even more parts! (I’m leaving out all “the love” that has been spent
enroute cause that can’t be quantified!)

Not until a kit actually leaves the ground and flys, does it become an
aeroplane. Until then it is mostly regarded as just a pile of parts. Part of
the problem – particularly with composite aircraft - is that the purchaser
does not know the competence of the original or subsequent builders and this
becomes a factor in how much most buyers are prepared to pay. Once the
aircraft is signed off from it’s test flying, then the price suddenly
becomes a little more realistic (if realistic can ever describe the
situation given the love and labor that goes into a homebuilt aeroplane).
For the above reason, it is often more profitable for the abandoning project
owner to separate out salient parts that he can get solid price for, such as
engine, prop etc in order to maximise returns

So, in short, if you are  not prepared to finish your beast, prepare
yourself for offers well below your outlays or what you think your pile of
parts is worth.
