Doug,  I believe that the original size for of the gear bolts was 7/16
possibly 3/8 or something like that and they were increased to 1/2 inch..  I
could be wrong.

I think you’re right; and I think the change was made in 1996, just prior to
my kit.  I recall some issue, like I had received ½” bolts and 7/16 sleeves
– or some such – and had to get it straightened out.
