REFLECTOR: Tractor vs Pusher props

Hi Brian,

MT...in tractor config...there sure is!....check the attached picture of my 
LAME mate's  One Design which he uses for unlimited aerobatic class (check 
those stubby symmetrical wings! - 195kts indicated in straight and level 
down low) on account that he has a super hot high compression IO360 in it. 
He is pretty happy with it despite the fact that he had many problems with 
damage to the MT on the Velocity XL -RG that he was the principal builder of 
down here. I'm pretty sure the crank is counterweighted which is why I guess 
he has not had any problems with the prop. Being a tail dragger the prop is 
located well off the dirt  and therefore not vacuuming the ground or 
catching stones - which appears to be the main problem with pushers, 
especially when as close to the ground as in the Velocity. Another friend's 
IFR Cozee, which is in very regular use, has taken alot longer to appear 
dented and split due to the fact that it is mounted much higher than the 
Velocity.

Most of the performance airplanes like the IO540 powered Team Rocket F1's 
down here, some YAKS, the odd RV, sport MT's as the preferred propellor.

I happened to be speaking with the MT agent and service centre owner 
/operator a couple of days ago and he said that the earlier props did have 
major problems with the blade "o" rings wearing the area  where they seal 
against the aluminium hubs - hence the fact that all new MT props now have 
metal sleeves in that area - not that MT was every proactive and came out 
and  owned up to that as a weakness. I am also led to believe that quite a 
few Lancairs have problems with MT propellor damage/denting here due also to 
the close proximity to the ground and the amount of loose material on Aussie 
airstrips.

TEC & others - I share this info on the basis that you do not ever indicate 
where  this info came from please - the aviation community down here is 
pretty intimate.
