Hi,

Personally I have a home network (wireless cable router) that allows me to network all of my house,  if you have a similar setup the firewall feature of the router can be used to block unwanted incoming ports.

Also if you use WIFI make sure you have the security features switched on so that other people can not sniff your connection and use it.
