Tom,

I recommend that you install the vent system as outlined in the manual, Ch 
9.3.5 (on line manuals).

I would not run the vent line into the engine compartment at all.  There can 
be fuel vapors coming out of the vent line and it is certainly flammable.  I 
doubt this would cause a fire in the tank it self, but I wouldn't take the 
chance.

The check valve will open and allow air into the tanks in case the bottom 
vent freezes or gets stopped up by insects.
