REFLECTOR: leak detection

A handheld propane leak detector works nicely.  Use it just like a freon 

detector, but the propane sniffer is a lot cheaper.

And propane is a lot easier to come by than Freon.

 

I ordered some Leak-Tec to help me locate the source of fumes in the sump
tank area; but realized the likely source before using it.  I had fueled
only the R-side tank for engine testing, with the L-side tank feed to the
sump blocked off – the line from the tank open.  I hadn’t occurred to me
that fumes would get into the L tank via the ¼” vent line from the vent
manifold, and come out the feed line.  Opening the L tank cap and sniffing
proved the tank definitely full of fumes.

 

I proceeded connect the line and leak check all the connections anyway.  The
main reason for getting the Leak-Tec is that it is supposedly not caustic or
corrosive as soap may be, so it seemed like a good idea for use on fittings
and the shutoff valve.  Other than that, it is likely only moderately more
effective than soap and water.  On a simulated leak it made more of a
continuous trail of small bubbles rather than bigger bubbles growing and
coalescing which better identified the leak.  But the stuff is $7.75 plus
shipping for 4 oz.

 

Anyway; no leaks, and further verified by holding 10” head on a water
manometer.
