REFLECTOR: Velocity Crash Info

I got this off of the canard-aviators at yahoogroups.com list re the Charlotte 
County, Florida crash:

"I spoke with another pilot/EAA tech evaluator who was at the airport and
witnessed the event.   The aircraft used an experimental Chevy V6 (maybe
V8).   The plane made one or two high speed taxi tests and then took off
normally.   At liftoff or shortly thereafter the engine became erratic and
quit.   The pilots made it back to the runway (the airport has two), hit
the runway hard, bounced quite high and went off the side of the
runway.   Both pilots escaped the burning plane under their own power (one
was slightly burned).   One pilot stated that fuel leaked inside the
fuselage after the crash.    The plane quickly transformed into melted
plastic.   It was alleged to have been the second flight."
