I installed a retractable step in my STD RG as follows: 

Cut a 3/16" slot 5 1/2" long into a 5/8" ID Al tube and also cut a notch at
each end (see photo).  Glass this tube to the floor of the A/C.  Make a 5/8"
OD steel rod for the step with a tapped hole for an AN3 bolt.  Put a spring
into the tube followed by the step.  A coin slot in the end of the step will
turn the step out of the notch and pop out.  Pull the step out and turn into
the outer notch.  The end of the step is cut to be flush with the fuselage.
