I am using Excel for my wiring chart, instead of a schematic.
For each major part of the airplane, there is an "interface", which is one
or more connectors connecting that part to the aircraft. I have a master
panel (this is the panel holding the main bus, fuses, relays, solenoids,
etc.). Of course the instrument panel, and the firewall.
Representing each major part is a worksheet in Excel. There are other
individual worksheets for more complicated items such as the SL30 nav/com.
Along the left side of each worksheet I list the connectors, and their pin
numbers. For my main panel, I have two 37 pin circular connectors, labelled
yellow and blue. All the connectors go in a single column. Next column is
the "airplane side", next is the "main panel side". Call these three
columns "group A". The idea is to document from the pin to the airplane,
and from the pin to the part on the main panel. Now, another three columns
are needed if any of the components are connected to each other on the main
panel. Call this data "group B". After that, list all of the components
and the electrical connections to them. Call all the rest of this stuff
"group C".
Group C is your easy to understand definition, like "pitot relay, coil
pin1". So for the pitot example, the worksheet may look something like
this:

Whenever you want to connect to a component, make a link to that component.
If you ever want to rename it, it is linked, so that name change carries
through to all of the other sheets that connect to that component.

Wonder if any fine builders have planned your building activities using a
program like Microsoft Project? MP uses GANT charts, Critical Paths,
Resource Allocations, etc. I remember my father who worked on the Apollo
project doing this, but on paper.
Several of the personal web builder sites have broken down the flow with
"as-you-go" sections like "Nose Gear" with photos and explanations (most
helpful!), but has anyone actually laid out a complete or partial plan in
advance and in this manner, or using a similar program?
MP can be a pain, to be sure, but offers rich dividends, including seeing
the flow of events, schedules, conflicts in advance, and flexibility to make
changes.
I know! This is total overkill and unnecessary, but thought I would ask!

BTW, for all's enlightenment, attached is a photo I received from a King Air
200 pilot in Mali, West Africa. This is the first known, suspended and
unimproved airstrip in the world. The VASI alignment is a little tricky
since it is off to the sides. Look closely. J
