I know the instructions say to keep it away from things electrical or
magnetic.  Really, it needs to me in a magnetically neutral area.

Magnetic metals will align the earths flux fields throwing off the compass.
You can buy some "compensating" magnets to get it right, butI thought if I
had problems, I would first try some "Mu metal" foil.  It sheilds magnetic
fields.  It does not go around the compass, rather around the radiating
part.

I have located my compass in the lower left panel.  Most people put them on
top of the panel, but that location is actually fairly close to the
avionics.  Keep your power wires in a twisted pair configuration, and you
"should" have few problems.
