No problem at all, the boost pump just fills it and from
there on it stays full.

No, it is a steel can and has about 100 times the capacity
of the typical in-line car filter.

I don't check it except at changes and have never found any
water.

I made my sump tank with a pickup tube that stops above the
back bottom so any water flows forward and away from the
pickup (like most tanks are made) and it could hold about a
quart of water.  This is where I check for water in the
gas.
