REFLECTOR:glare shield and compass

That will work just fine. The compass is not heavy.

Actually I plan to mount mine from the overhead. This will put it farther from
magnetic fields, and obstruct my view less.

No. Aluminum is non-magnetic. 

If you twist all your positive and negative wires in pairs, you'll eliminate
stray magnetism at its source. Conversely, the WORST thing you could do is run
all the positive wires on one side of the panel and negative wires on the other.
