Al,
Most LEDs operate in the 3 to 5 Volt range. If applied to a 12 Vdc =
circuit, a dropping resistor will be needed. As noticed on trucks and =
traffic lights lately, packaged LED are becoming popular as well as =
economical. Sunbrite (available from Mouser.com) is one manufacture =
that has packaged LEDs with dropping resistors in a miniature bulb form. =
This can then be used directly in a panel indicator intended for bulbs =
with the reliability of LEDs.

I have been toying with annunciators/push button switches (for use in my =
home made AP, engine monitor, and for my GPS). The most economical I =
have found is Omron A16 series switches (Digikey$13.61 for the =
PB/Indicator and $8.16 for the indicator only.) These are listed for =
24Vdc, but the LED indicator lamp can be replaced with a 12V LED package =
for about $3.00. These units take about 3/4" X 1" or 3/4" X 3/4" of =
panel space, I am planning on using Brother lettering tape to make the =
legend plates, which fit under the cover plate. This should give a =
professional looking annunciator.

I have a total of about 11 green, yellow, and red indicator lights on =
my panel design for various alerts and circuit indicators. I'd =
appreciate some input on what to use. Seems LEDs would be the way to go =
- less likely to burn out then lamps. Being electronically challenged =
in certain areas, I'd have a hard time choosing from all the LEDs in the =
Digikey catalog. Is there a type that takes 12v, or do I need resisters =
in series, or a transformer.

BTW; they are set up so none of them are on when in normal flight =
status. =20

  Thanks,

  Al
