REFLECTOR: Performance

That’s about what I get in my standard FGE with an IO-360-C1C and a MT Elco at full gross. With the VGs and full gross, it makes a 7-8 knot difference (decrease). Too much for me and I uninstalled the VGs. At lighter weights, it’s only like 2-3 knots. My CHTs never get over 385, but my oil will get up to 200 in a full gross climb to 10,000. The oil then goes down to about 185. I do have VGs in front of my overhead NACA scoops for cooling.

With a Catto, my speed is a little slower and I can’t lean much because it doesn’t like it. So it’s slower with more fuel consumption with a Catto on. I have to throttle back to about 21” to maintain prop RPM under 2,700. The Catto is really nice for a fixed, but not as good as the MT for takeoff, landing and general cruise. The MT crapped out on me after about 600 hours – it threw a leading edge in flight. Not a great situation, but the vibration was minimal and I made a normal landing as I was on a descent for landing anyway. It happened right after nasty turbulence? That cost me 8,000 in repairs from MT. I think that the MT is a little flimsy, but I see some cracks on the Catto now too after about 50 hours. Nothing is perfect!

Overall, I like the MT and I’d do it again – as long as it isn’t dying on me every 500 hours or so! However, if I were not at full gross on really long cross countries all the time with my family and friends, I’d probably enjoy the Catto just as much. The Catto is a little more work on takeoff and landing, but bang for the buck, it’s nice!

TAS 161kts/WOT/5500 ft/2500 RPM/OAT 67 deg F/11.7 GPH (I couldn't lean without CHT's climbing >400). Need to reinstall VG's in front of the NACA's.
