REFLECTOR: How much for a new engine?

Luis,
I do not think Mistral was ever a realistic company. I applaud the engineering but not the market savy. When they first started mentioning their product, IIRC, they were thinking in the low $20's...that jumped to the 30's and IIRC, the last I heard was in the $60's for the two rotor. Its my understanding they barley still exist as a company. They got a lot of socialist money from the government that dries up once they company is ready to go into mass sales.....the money is primarily for R&D at start up, if I understand correctly.
As you may remember, I have the two rotor Mistral intake. We were one of the few that was able to buy an individual part and it was pricey at $2500...and they were a pain to deal with and provided NO support. Ok, we knew that going in. BTW, my intake is for sale for a decent price. It is a nice piece. Also, my rebuilt tw rotor with new iron and plates is available. My trouble seemed to be with the electronics which with Tracy Crooks retirement would mean me starting the ECU over.
I have chosen to go with a Continental. If my research is correct, a factory new Continental TSIO-360 (I know you need more power) WITHOUT any type of trade in or core cat reach to the $70 or 80K range. Ok, I know multiple discounts can be had but that seems pretty shocking on its face. Seems you can get pricing in the $40 with the right discounts, venders etc and depending on which engine.
I found cores starting at around $5k - $10k with rebuild cost pretty much all over. Decent mid time (without a prop strike) seem to be in the high teens to mid twenties. I have spent in the high teens so far while I wait for my rebuild......I like my builder BUT I am becoming annoyed....angry....as I have been waiting for ten months now. Four months was used as the jugs were at Airmark to be yellow tagged. I have had Facetime and pictures of the progress but I think this has taken too long. Also, add about $5k for the NOS MT-18 electric prop. I will be modifying a 337 pusher engine mount. The pics I got before Christmas showed the heads installed, so hopefully its close, BUT, my project has come to a stand still while waiting as most of the things I need to do require the engine. Sigh.
There is a lot of demand for the 360 (180 - 200 hp) range of engines so prices tend to be higher. I have seen much better pricing on used in the 250 to 300 hp range. Sometimes its hard to get a real price without jumping through some hoops. Also, any prop strike requires more inquiry and a bit of faith, but it sure brings down the price :-)
As you know, I still like the rotary....a lot, but my goal is to hopefully have a good, solid airplane and not just to prove the viability of the rotary in aircraft.

Subject: REFLECTOR: How much for a new engine?
Dear Collective,
I've been diligently saving my pennies for the day I can buy an engine. Although I'm not there yet, the time is getting closer - to the point that I've been making calls to establish baseline prices. With that in mind, I recently contacted Mistral and received an interesting quote (bordering on insulting) for their experimental (not yet certified) 300Hp NA rotary engine.
Upon seeing theirs and other's #s, I became curious to know what the realistic price point would be for a factory new engine from the demand side. So, my question to the collective is, how much would you be willing to spend on a factory new a/c engine (ie regardless of brand). I know that the first impulse is to say "as little as possible" but I'd appreciate your opinion on what you would personally consider a "fair market price". To make the $$$ standard, think FWF complete (w/o propeller or mount but include accessories) and 300Hp.
If you already have your windmill, I would also appreciate to know how much you put down, whether it was a new or mid-time engine, what Hp, and year of purchase to calibrate for inflation. My purpose is to get a sense of the market, hopefully give me some negotiating ammo, and foremost to foster a group discussion.
Thanks in advance for your time!
With Regards,
Luis Luciano
