REFLECTOR: Front Landing gear GAS Spring Installation

Jeff,

Two years is the factory recommendation. Most people are getting more time than that out of their gas springs, though. If you're getting good pressure out of it, you may not need to change it. One way to check . . . Put the gear up and turn off the electrical system. Dump the pressure and see if the nose gear locks in the over-center position. With no hydraulic pressure it should still take some arm strength to push the gear unlocked.

If you need or want to change the gas spring, here are some tips:

1. Put the gear down. Remove the clips from the ends (connection points) of the old spring. Pull it off.

2. Figure out some way to hold the new gas spring slightly compressed. You can make something out of angle aluminum, scrap iron, threaded rod, or just use safety wire. You can estimate how much to compress it by holding the new spring against its installation points on the gear mechanism. A little more compression is better than not enough for this process.

3. Remove the clips from the ends of the new gas spring and hold it compressed slightly.

4. Snap it into place on the gear. Remove your compressor device. Test that the gear works through its whole cycle. Re-install the retaining clips onto the ball ends of the gas spring.

Hope this helps!

Subject: REFLECTOR: Front Landing gear GAS Spring Installation

I need to replace the gas spring on my front landing gear in the keel. And from what I hear from Velo Factory, this needs to be changed every 2 years or so. So with around 500 flying Velo's. I would hope someone has pictures or a video on how to install this gas strut in the keel. It looks like a knuckle buster. Any advise would be great. I want to still own this Velo 173 RG when I get done, so the easier this is to replace the better.
Thx, Jeff

Thank you, Jeff
