I was told the same thing at the same customs office (Fort Pierce) next time I flew in with 2 inch wide duct tape numbers on the Fuselage with out any problem. 6 times since with the duct tape on the winglets and still no problems. I fly out with the little numbers because the Bahamas don't care, I then install them before coming back to the US and get them back off ASAP so it does not mess with the paint. I thought if he could see the numbers from his air conditioned chair, through the window, he was good with whatever you put the numbers on with?

I did research the AOPA sight before, and mentioned to the agent that the AOPA listed tape as acceptable. He still said "No", that's wrong. I knew he was being cool about it, and letting me off, so I said "Thanks for the clarification" and dropped it.
