With the Andair selector you have to pull the button up in the middle od the handle in order to shut it off. The only difference between this system and what is on the Piper Arrow I fly is the Arrow doesn’t have a “Both” option. I’ve always managed my fuel with my watch.


Burt & Mike write up was pretty thorough. When a fuel cap isn’t present the fuel is pushed out when the tanks are plumbed together. The “capped” tank is getting slightly pressurized which results in the fuel migrating over to the uncapped tank and overfilling it causing the loss of fuel. Once all of the fuel ha migrated you have fuel starvation with a full fuel tank that is inaccessible.

Yea fuel cap left off is bad... so is turning the fuel off, like this local rental, or to the empty tank.  


 

I like the simplicity of the sump system, because I can check the caps on the ground where I have plenty of time and undivided attention.  Changing tanks in the air can certainly be done safely, but there's a lot more going on.  6 of one, half dozen of the other, they can both make you dead if done wrong.  


 

A valve with 'both' and 'off' settings gives you the worst of both worlds, in opinion, you can still shut it off, and you can still suck fuel out of the good tank when they're cross-connected.  But as long as you like it, it's all good.

Burt and Mike were pretty factual in their argument and it did make sense to me. It just so happened that a Cozy flier trashed his plane about that time due to a combination of a missing gas cap and a single sump system.


 

I like what you have done Larry. I think you were very thorough in your approach. It’s just not what I’m looking for in my plane. I just would not feel comfortable going that route.
