REFLECTOR: loose fuel caps

Jeff, I handled this during construction by floxing a fitting at the
bottom of the fuel tank directly below the fuel cap, and attaching a SS
cable from the fitting to the cap.

However, floating around in the Central States repository are at least one
solution that can be installed after construction... as I recall the
solution was an aluminum "T" that fit into the tank attached to a cable
which attached to the cap.

To Scott's question regarding the strength required - I think I remember
in the recent discussion regarding fuel systems with no L/R selector valve
that someone discussed an experience where the cap came off... and merely
sat there on the end of the chain (while the tank emptied). Anyone
remember the precise details?

In any case ... this should be viewed as an absolute safety of flight
issue... do NOT fly with unsecured caps! It has already cost lives!

Re: REFLECTOR: loose fuel caps
can anyone else send pics of what they have done to protect against the
departing fuel cap syndrome? Also wondering if there are any safety
retainers that have been installed over the cap?
Thank you, Jeff

Vance,
Just curious about the strength of the retaining chain.
If a cap were to come loose, I imagine there would be some violent
"whipping action" on the top surface of the strake, i.e. strong forces
going on with the cap at the end of the chain.
Do you know if the cap model you are installing will withstand 15-minutes
of "pounding"??
Best,
Scott B.
