REFLECTOR: AP Pitch servo and trim

All,
I've got a pitch servo for my autopilot that will also serve to adjust the
trim.  The AP/Pitch system is coupled with my EFIS and has trim speed
setting for high and low speed cruise and adjusts the trim speed
accordingly.  I don't plan on using the pitch actuator supplied with the
kit.  My question is this:  Do I still need to install that spring gizmo or
can I just attach an extension to the elevator center bracket and connect
directly?  I'm not sure exactly what the spring does, I'm guessing it's
some sort of dampener and I'm thinking that the intrinsic dampening in my
AP/trim system will suffice, but I wanted to solicit opinions.
