REFLECTOR: DIY EFIS

Mark,

I would consider an off-the-shelf setup like that at some point in the future. There are a number of conditions to be met, though. Not all of them are available today.

1. Pitot-static data fed to the tablet, not just GPS altitude and ground speed. Something like this would work:
http://kitplanes2.com/blog/2013/07/levil-technologys-new-ilevilaw-adahrs/

2. Tablets in the panel are dedicated to that purpose. I don't want my flight instruments to double as my email client, traveling web browser, and portable game system.

3. Software that is specifically designed to be a primary EFIS. This is the biggest hurdle. Most products that I've seen are flight-planning apps or in-flight charts that have added an EFIS screen. I can foresee these same products deleting this "add-on feature" for liability reasons when they discover pilots have started using them for critical flight information. Also, until the programmers of these systems are committed to providing a product that is reliable enough for IMC, I don't have the confidence that every revision of their software will be tested to an acceptable level of assurance.

4. High level of integration. I'm willing to pay a lot more than the cost of an iPad for a device that will integrate with my approach GPS, radios, autopilot, Vertical Power system, and engine monitor.

Until #3 and #4 are solved, I plan on having a dedicated EFIS and using a tablet for backup navigation and future EFIS experimentation. There's one EFIS manufacturer (GRT?) that allows a tablet to serve as a second screen for their product. This seems like the best of both worlds . . . dedicated equipment with off-the-shelf expansion options.

And panel mount WAAS GPS, as in 430W or better with approaches.

As a PFD system? Or a backup?

And as to "along with a WAAS enabled GPS", do you mean like a panel mount aviation GPS? Like a 400W?

All,
Anyone considering permanently, or semi-permanently mounting two full sized iPads and adding an app like WingxPro7

Or simlars:

and a Levil AHRS and compatible ADSB receiver for traffic and weather

along with a WAAS enabled GPS for a complete glass panel, short of mini-backup steam gauges?

I would think this would run the flight deck nicely for under $4,000 all in. Much less if you picked up used iPads.

I was preparing to go GRT at 5 times that price, but I wonder if I wouldn't be just as safe with this setup. Maintenance on this flight deck would be at Best Buy.

Thoughts appreciated.
