REFLECTOR: Was Fuel Tanks: Now Ethanol Free Mogas

Highly recommend everyone looking to use auto fuel talks to Bill Mulroney about his experiences and also tank sealing ideas. He found as Michael said that the fuel injector cleaner has a chemical that goes through the Jeffco, doesn’t hurt the glass but eats the foam and you see your tanks shrink and you can see the bulkheads. Everywhere he double glassed and epoxied prior to putting in the jeffco is fine.

Best,

Not until they take out the fuel injector cleaners that eat foam and fiberglass. You can find plenty of ethanol free auto fuel. Most distributors put in the ethanol but the other additives come from the refineries. Auto fuel + fiberglass tanks = trouble. We need metal tank drop in's or a much better sealant!

All,

I thought I'd chime in on a related topic: Pure Gas. I have an app for my iPhone that locates stations selling ethanol free gasoline in my local area. Bere in central Texas there is plenty available. Search PUREGAS. I only run ethanol free gas in my cars, the app tells the last time it was tested ethanol free. As well you can easily test it yourself. Seems to be a growing 'rebel' movement against ethanol in gas. Should help you auto engine and mogas guys.

It was my understanding that the strake baffles are structual. How does this work on the inserts? I had to redo my strakes a few years ago when the Jeffco failed badly. It came off both strakes in sheets and flakes. I do have an auto conversion, so yeah, the idea of cheaper gas is very appealing. I have had samples in local 10% (mandated in the five counties surrounding Houston) ethonal for about five years ago with no noted problem...but, ya never know. I have used both local auto gas and avgas during engine testing...now I am in the early stages of Phase One and just have it on my mind. Hope to fly again on Thursday after addressing an issue which required an engine tear down and rebuild.

FWIW,

Chris

Hi Ron,

Jean Prudhomme made some. They were pre-fab - just drop into your strakes. Pics are (were) up on TVBF.ORG.

With all the talk of new fuels coming down the pipe I have been wondering what it might mean to
fueling my velocity. My biggest concern is compatibility with the fuel strakes. I seem to remember
some one made or was going to make a blow molded tank that fit in the fuel strakes. Does
any one remember or know what ever became of this idea. Seems like a great fix
if I was building now but it may be the only option in the future.
