I get 3G data in most places until it becomes intermittent ~ usually around 5K feet (although sometimes it works even higher) around a decent sized city. I've only had one experience with a friends Status in his Baron, with weather around we ran on 3G until cruise climb and then switched to over to ADS-B. Worked great!
