In Canada, filing, opening, closing a VFR flight plan is the new religion. When you land or bit before, have tower or radio operator close plan. You'll discover their FSS at 866-WXBrief is more knowledgable and helpful than US (typically), and go out of their way to help you in routing in terrain and/or WX challenged areas. Flight following is good when in range, make special point to call ATC or FSS or local airport "Radio Operator" iof deviating from a planned route, cuz they typically don't search outside a ten mile path of filed or known flight path. They WILL go looking for you - but remember the remarkably cheery helpful country only has about as many people as NYC in a land bigger than US.

Start practicing your NAVCANADA.CA flight prep, you check WX by http://www.flightplanning.navcanada.ca/cgi-bin/CreePage.pl?Langue=anglais&NoSession=NS_Inconnu&Page=forecast-observation&TypeDoc=html.

Plan your stops for the local Flying Clubs - in CA they are the heart and soul of GA, for fuel, flight planning, hospitality, etc. You'll see what I mean when you get up there. Typically transient parking is cheap, advise and help profuse, nice member lounges, restaurants, etc. Amazing actually - socialized General Aviation in that regard is not so bad.

Call CANPASS (800-CANPASS) at least TWO hours before your arrival, else you have to wait until 2 hours elapse. You can file early, than call to adjust your arrival. You will likely just get a number. Put that in your log book.

If you do not have a eApis number, go get it NOW at http://www.flightplanning.navcanada.ca/cgi-bin/CreePage.pl?Langue=anglais&NoSession=NS_Inconnu&Page=forecast-observation&TypeDoc=html.

You need to file eApis when you DEPART, but more importantly when you ARRIVE. Give yourself an extra half hour to file your manifests - it is arguably world's worst web application.  ALSO, when arriving, you MUST call ahead to your US destination to let them know you are coming, or you will have the FBI on your ass.  (This wasn't true for coming back from Bahamas 2 years ago, but definitely is in AK and Northwest US). Get your arrival time arranged with entry point, but remind them you still have to do eApis, which I found takes from 5 to 90 minutes, depending on which eApis rabbit hole you get into on a particular day. File flight following and/or file/open international flight plan - remind them to give you a transponder code if you don't get one. If you are running late, US FSS can advise customs of change in arrival time.

Enjoy, despite eApis.

Western Canada were the mountains are is the same as The North West Pacific as they say it..VFR You may have to sit out a storm to get over the mountains

As for flight following You will need to call a Center and ask for flight following  Yes you should file a flight plain and do ask for a transponder code if one is not given. The Center will help if they are not busy but don't hope for lots of help.
Do have fun.
Some day I wont to fly a figure 8 in Canada and the USA that will be fun

Thanks Mark.  I'll let you know how it goes.  I just planned a tentative itinerary.  Very tentative…Knoxville - Finger Lakes NY - St. John, NB - St Johns, NF -  St. Anthony, NF - Stevenville, NF - Sidney, NS - Charlottetown, PWE -  Halifax, NS - Yarmouth, NS - Quebec City - Ithaca, NY - Knoxville.  Whew!…I don't think I can get it all in.

I like to fly VFR when I can and IFR only when necessary.  Any Canadian's on the Canardian (Reflector) list out there that can tell me anything scary about VFR in Canada?  I think a flight plan is required.  Do they have flight following in the region I am going to fly?  Do they call it "flight following"?

Thanks

Brooke

>Lake Placid, NY is beautiful. Bennington, VT would make a nice stop. Watkins Glen, via Elmira, NY for soaring and hiking the glen. Niagara Falls. wine country tours in the Finger Lakes. Along the coast, you could do Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Block Island, Newport, etc. Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City is beautiful. Try the web site Funplacestofly.com.
