REFLECTOR: Gascolator requirements in Canada

Bob,

I really liked Brian's suggestion to rename the sump tank. I went digging through MD-RA docs to see if there was a way to make that work. I found the Canadian definition of gascolator:

Fuel Strainer or Filter, (gascolator): On all amateur built aircraft there must be a fuel strainer or filter between the fuel tank outlet and the inlet of either the carburetor or an engine driven fuel pump. The fuel strainer or filter must:
               (a) be accessible for draining and cleaning and must incorporate a screen which is easily removable;
                (b) Have a sediment trap and drain

In another section there is a requirement
                gascolator (must be) located at the lowest point in the fuel system;

To "rename" your sump tank, it would have to have an easily removable screen, be accessible (openable?) for draining and cleaning, and have a sediment trap. That's a lot to try to build into the sump.

I'd go with the traditional gascolator mounted as low on the firewall as possible. If it's questioned, you can point out that you have a drain at the lowest point in the fuel system in addition to a drainable gascolator with easily removable/cleanable screen and sediment trap.

I'm not an expert on Canadian aviation rules, but I don't think you'll be able to get your sump tank to fill all these requirements.

Just rename your sump tank.

Since a gascolator is required in Canada "at the lowest point in the fuel system" which would put it under the belly of the aircraft, I was wondering where other people have installed their gascolator?? Specifically those of us building or built in Canada and having met the MD-RA requirements. Your comments would be appreciated along with photos of the installation.
