REFLECTOR: Miata Seat recliners revisited

<Back to the original thread>

I went by Mazda today to get prices on new 2004 Miata hinges. They were $330 for the pair.
They also don’t have the outside cover any more, they have been discontinued.

May have to buy them on ebay. Would be much cheaper, but would then have to figure out the cover.

You can actually buy the winterized windshield washer fluid, it contains alcohol.
This is what guys buy for water/methanol injection systems.

  Probably need to add some alcohol also to prevent the mixture from freezing up at altitude and breaking the pump/lines

  The water needs to be distilled, otherwise you will build up mineral deposits which will hinder cooling (when dry).

  Chris,

  On your over temp issue on taxi, I read years ago where a guy w/a rotary in a Vans derivative installed an auto windshield washer pump with a spray bar near the radiator. On long taxi holds in the heat he would toggle the pump motor to hit the radiator with H2O and that knocked his engine's H2O temp right down. Set off a steam cloud I'd imagine... A company used to sell this concept for pickups towing 5th wheel trailers to 'desert proof' a tow rig. These used the water from the RV' water tanks.

  Thought I'd pass it along.

    I too bought a Miata hinge. I think from a different year. Mine did not come with a cover either. Also, it appears a bit thick. May be the way they are or a year difference.

    I am fighting severe cooling issues during high speed taxi test so reclining seats are on the back burner.

    $25 for one left side on E-bay. E-bay is almost too easy and dangerous.

      Where did you get them? eBay ? Local salvage?

        I took the advice given a couple of weeks ago and ordered a pair of Miata seat recliner hinges- I got a good deal on them ($50 for the pair), but I just got them, and they seem a little bit heavy at 3.25 pounds each – maybe that is relative, but did anyone that used them lighten them in any way before installation? Also, did not get the nice plastic covers with them, so will need to figure something out on that too…..
