REFLECTOR: Blow by

I've got over 800 hours on my current IO-360C1C with good compressions. I also have dual oil coolers in the nose. I normally keep my oil at the 5.5 to 6 qt point on the stick. Anything above 6 seems to magically depart the aircraft after an hour or so.
Many years ago on my first long cross country, I was a little nervous so filled it up to the 8 quart point on the stick. 4.5 hours later it was down to around 6. I was concerned that I was burning oil. Everyone said don't worry. On the way back I took off
at 6 quarts and 4.5 hrs later it was still at about 6 quarts. As you probably already know, our systems carry a lot more oil than the six quarts indicated by the stick.

Subject: REFLECTOR: Blow by

Last week we were discussing the amount of oil different engines burn in a given time. I mentioned that I do not fill up my crankcase because the first quart will blow out within an hour if I do that . However if I fill to six quarts I don’t go through another quart for about four to five hours. After that I got a note from someone that I should not do as I described as it is a indication that there is a blow by problem with my engine (Lyc IO-360). If this is true, what is the cause of blow by?
