Andy Millin posted a good article here on the reflector about the best
HID types to use. I took his advice, and went the junkyard (Ebay) route
to get what I needed. Essentially, you should use the bulb bases that
have the ignitor in the base rather than in the ballast module. The
reason is for EFI noise. If I recall correctly, the D1S and D2S bulbs
are the correct ones.
I lucked out and snagged my first one in an assembly for about $30.
Then, all of the enthusiasts figured out how cool HID is, and you can't
find the cheap deals easily anymore. I use the Sylvania ballast for all
of my lamps so I have an easier time of replacement, if needed.
My landing light is HID, and taxi lights are HID. I put the ballast in
the canard tips, which are hollow.
