REFLECTOR: SoCal Ride in Velocity

My handling qualities were very poor until I added vortex generators to the
wing and canard. I can control the plane down to about 70kts like Mike
Watson. Also check that the rudders are slightly toed out. Keep the
ailerons 1/4 down.

I am in Oregon, not that close to SoCal, but if you want to fly one that
handles really well, let me know.

Hi,
This is Erik Franks with the Velocity XL-RG. Just finished the 40 hour Phase
1 flight test program yesterday. My friend Al Smith who is test flying wants
to compare the handling characteristics of this Velocity to another one and
was hoping to ride with another pilot in the Los Angeles/Bakersfield/San
Diego area.
We tried lowering the ailerons 1/4" with neutral stick and that seemed to
make handling much worse. Even with vortilons and trailing edge fences
control at 85 knots isn't as good as we'd like. Any suggestions? Any
opportunity for a ride along? Thank you.
-Erik Franks

Try VG's on the wings. With VG's I have full control down to 70 knots.

Hi Erik,
Have your test pilot call John Abraham at the factory: the airplane is heavy
on rudders in pattern work. Lots of folks try to change that with various
methodologies, yet if flown as taught by John, leading with rudders and then
pulling elevator, you'll find all the maneuverability you need at slow
speed. After about 25+or- TnG's in the pattern at Sebastian I felt quite
confident.
