REFLECTOR: aileron binding

Nick,

Do you have a part number? Is it a direct 1-for-1 replacement? If so, I'd
like to capture it on the Wiki.

Reiff,

I too thought there was too much friction and slop on the ailerons. I
talked to Teleflex controls about the problem. They told me about their
TFXtreame cable design that eliminates most of the slop and decrease the
friction. I installed the TFXextreme cables and the friction was reduced
significantly and very little slop. I haven’t flown the cables yet but I
can tell the difference between the TFX cable from the original cables.

Don,

Here's a collection of comments, impressions, and stories about ailerons
that I've collected over the past 3 years. Some of these are even true. I
don't pretend to be an expert, but I'll put this out for anyone that wants
it:

1. Velocity ailerons frequently feel stiff. Once the engine is
running, the vibration eliminates that issue. (I'm not claiming that this
is an acceptable solution, just that I've heard it from many builders.)

2. Some have improved the situation with bearings, universal joints,
and push-pull cable lubrication.

3. The Rocket Racing League wanted to eliminate the stiffness (since
they flew half of the time with the engine off) so they replaced the
push-pull cables with a series of pushrods and bellcranks.

4. When I was in Sebastian this winter, Velocity was building the
twin. They were considering using "a higher grade" of push-pull cable to
reduce friction and slop.

Hope this helps.

It's not the aileron. It's something in the cable. With no cable attached
the aileron moves with ZERO friction. But once the cable is attached, it's
sticky.

I'm hoping that I'm creating a problem where none exists. When I had both
wings on, Malcolm said the stick was easier to move than most others. So
perhaps the weight of the other aileron cancels out some of the cable
friction.

Don,

With the Aileron torque tube travelling through an arc – a spherical
bearing will help with binding. In my case, I’m going ‘old school’ (aka
Long EZ/Cozy) – and using a universal joint at the connection between the
torque tube and the aileron, in conjunction with the spherical bearing at
the wing root. Parts are available off the shelf from Cozy Girls, and
Infinity Aerospace. Let me know if you’d like part #’s, etc.
