Thanks. Yes, they're a pain. I built all my own hoses. I thought about taking it to NAPA, but I'm not sure that they would be as careful as I am.

If you haven't built a hose before your probably in for a surprise.
You need a vise and its better if you have a hose vice or an adapter for your vise. The adapter prevents you from galling the outside of the fittings, no big deal but nice to have.
Cutting the hose is tricky. I prefer using a very thin cutoff blade, I use a 1/16 thick blade on my air driven mini-cutoff tool. Be sure to tape with duct tape or masking tape around the hose before cutting. Cut straight through. Slowly but no too slow! Make a couple practice cuts first.. You may need to trim a bit of the braid, go slow, use a really sharp set of dikes, or it will unravel and you will just have to recut the end.
Oil or grease the inside of hose end before inserting the fitting.
Make sure the end is aligned to the hose so it cuts squarely.
Shine a light into the hose end after inserting and verify no tags or bulges just inside the fitting. Should be a smooth inner liner as far as you can see.
Its nice to be able to pressure test, I've never owned the equipment to do that, so I eagle eye the fitting on the first couple of runups. A heatup, cool down cycle between tests is good.
