Yea, the stainless screws deform easily. Use grade 5/8 they will not bend
under any normal circumstances.

When I was building I got wind there might be a historical problem with the
seat hinge screws. I thought I would nip that problem in the bud by using
1/4 20 machine screws. Well, after very limited use, I noted that the
screws attaching the seat back to the hinge had loosened. I tried to
tighten them up but was unable. The screws had bent! I was a bit
surprised, but I guess us 200 pounders do put a significant strain on that
mechanism. My original 1/4 20 were stainless machine screws. Stainless
seems to be quite "bendable". I went to Home Depot and got some grade 5 or
grade 8 (can't remember) bolts and installed them. I haven't had the seat
apart yet to check for bolt distortion, but I see no sign of it and they are
not loose. FWIW

I was wondering if others had had trouble with the seat hinge screws
breaking and/or distorting. I have had to replace twisted and broken screws
a few times now. Ok, while I am by no means a small man (5'10 at 200 lbs) I
am not so big that I would think I would be stressing these parts.
One thought is that I have been standing on the brakes a lot doing engine
run ups and testing, but still it seems odd.
I have now added extra screws by tapping out additional screw holes. I am
close enough to hopefully successful flight that I wanted to address this
gremlin.
I had the tech out to test my transponder and it has a problem so he took it
to take a look (really nice and helpful guy for those in SE Texas). Next
step, squawk party....
