REFLECTOR: VG

Duane did say that the front seat minimum needed to be 155 lbs. I looked at him and said well, what's the chance of me being 155 anytime soon? (I weigh 240). My airplane is a standard with the standard wing. The real advantage of the smaller wing is that I can cruise with a 173 RG. Feel free to check my numbers on flightaware.com anytime. I normally cruise right at 200 mph with fixed gear and fixed pitch prop. I have the standard wheel pants and my airplane is as stock as any out there with the IO360.

I'm not sure why Duane said that.

During the main wing stall investigation when Maher still owned Velocity, he said that Vortilons significantly reduced the chance of encountering deep stall and recommended them on all airplanes in addition to the changes they made to the strake and reduced rear CG range.

Maybe The Swings changed something later that reduced that requirement?  Maybe only STD size wings need them?

I had not heard they were no longer required and apologize if I was spreading miss-information.  They are supposed make the ailerons more effective at low speeds, I don't know because I have never flown without them.

I have flown with and without VG's and they definitely increase aileron effectiveness and reduce takeoff and landing speeds.

The factory doesn't have vortilons on their aircraft. My airplane has been flying for 19 years without them. Not to say that I wouldn't put them on but I know of other velocities without them as well. I have the short wing. I once asked Duane about adding them and he said they went needed. I have somewhere around 800 landings to date. I may try them one day along with TE Fences. It would be interesting to see how much difference they make.

>>>I had VG's on my Glastar.  They were however just triangular shaped devices that were mounted just above the airfoil out on the leading edge and they roughly followed the curvature of the wing.  There were two on each wing, one mounted about 3/4 outboard and the other right at the root.  They were advertised to lower the stall speed and to help maintain aileron effectiveness at low airspeeds.  I ended up removing the root mounted VG's to better seal the wing root area (the cabin was drafty) and I didn't notice one bit of difference in either handling or the stall speed.
