REFLECTOR: Equipment I wish I had

This may be a little off topic but the talk about airspeeds reminds me of something. I don't know about yours, but my airline always pounded into us: Stabilized Approach! On speed at the marker and no change in speed until the flare. I tried bringing that idea to approaches in the Velocity. Maintaining precise glidepath control at 90 KIAS in gusty conditions was a lot of work. Frankly, I wasn't very good at it. Then, by happenstance one day I tried flying the approach at 110 KIAS. A world of difference…..I could actually be precise! No problem slowing to landing speed in the last 200 feet. Besides, 200 DH landing runways are pretty long anyway. So…you can throw the idea of "over the numbers" approach speed from the marker out the window when flying the Velocity.

On another subject, after much angst, I finally got my starter adapter problem fixed. The problem seems to have been the starter motor not releasing the starter adapter clutch. The starter motor was itself checked numerous times by me and other shops and showed no anomalies. However, after eliminating all other possible causes of adapter failure, CMI and I decided to just put a new starter on the plane. We installed a Skytec. Many successful starts and no problems since. Finally! :-)
